This movie did make me mad at first like others also replied. But I soon realized that the bible says non-believers are blinded by the enemy. The Lord convicts me and I know as followers of Jesus we must have compassion on those and pray for our enemies. So I agree with those urging prayer for Bill and in regard to defending Bill's claims on the history or validity of christianity I believe there are those that are capable of defending it intellectually but I think more effective or more important is to live out our faith and by our way of life and the way we love unconditionally they will glorify our father in heaven through our works. Jesus said love was the important commandment.

Sigh... some of you get it... some of you dont.
If you're angry, it's because that is a typical psychological human response towards someone threatening your worldview. It's the same reason that people can get ridiculously irate over politics. When someone disagrees with you or presents views that challenge your beliefs then your mind immediately kicks back with anger to protect the validity and security of your own perspective. It's this type of thought and irrationality that Maher is looking to confront.
Look for the message, don't take it personally. Do some critical thinking on your own. Take all of Maher's questions and look to seriously answer them for yourself. Take it a step further and think what Maher might say in the face of your response. You can strengthen your faith this way... or perhaps you'll come to the conclusion that organized religion IS mostly a farce. . . Either way, educating yourself on WHY you have faith or why you SHOULD have faith is better than just saying "because the bible says so".
As to the whole Horus-Christ parallel. Frederick Cruz (above) only had it half right. There's several different versions of the Horus story, not just one. So the numbers he quotes are simply one version of Horus' existence. Although, historians HAVE ruled that any parallels between Horus and Christ ARE too far-fetched. So yes Maher did exaggerate those claims... HOWEVER, I believe his intent there was to introduce the idea that legends, myths, and cultural stories get passed down through generations and it is entirely possible that some reality was mixed with myth.
I'm not surprised though that Jeff White (the author of this article) did absolutely nothing to address the topics in this movie besides encourage others to pray for Maher and that the fiery end of the world is near. It's this type of discussion and thought that Bill Maher blasted in his movie. Are you incapable of scholarly thought and research?
I also found it interesting that neither the author nor any of the comments on this page attempted to tackle Maher's arguments of how ridiculous the burning bush and Jonah stories are. I believe that that is because they are impossible to justify with any other argument than "god does miracles" or "the lord works in mysterious ways" - Which in and of themselves are catchalls that spare people from intelligently discussing the topic- If you'll believe that god talked to Moses via a burning bush then why would you call Joseph Smith's story (the founder of mormonism) ridiculous?
If you want to believe in God, as he is described in the bible, then do you really think that it's been a couple thousand years since he has sent or spoken to another messenger? (Which Maher notes that the 'prophets' are always oddly alone when spoken to by god). "God" changed the Old Testament rules on earth with Jesus and the New Testament.... are you unwilling to consider the possibility that he may have changed them again by talking with/thru someone else?
Doubt is healthy. Believe because you have sought out information from all angles. Don't believe just because you've read the propaganda.

Guess Who? Bill Maher

Nobody, should talk about my Almighty Father like that, they will pay. I'm not Kidding... It's All Backwards... And He's Coming...

Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to Fear Him.

The people have walked in darkness have seen a great light: that they dwell in the land of the shadow of death upon them hath the light shined. Isaiah 9;3 Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they devide spoil. Isaiah 9;3 Thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Mid'i-an. Isaiah 9;4

For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood, but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire. Isaiah 9;5

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everylasting Father, The Prince of Peace. The zeal of the Lord of host will perform this. Isaiah 9;6

no one can call himself a christian if he himself does not have faith in the lord. you are not a real christian if you do not take His words in your heart. it's all about love. be careful of what you say because the lord said whoever put the name of the Son of God will be forgiven; but whoever shall put the name of the Holy Spirit in vain shall not be forgiven, ever. our Dad exists, and let's constantly pray for those who haven't met Him yet. so let's pray for those who are lost, that they may be found and that they may soon feel our Father's love for them. :)

I'm glad Bill made this movie for 2 main reasons. It showcased the hypocrasy in Islam, and two it blasphemed the true Christ with lies that made me question and research Bill's claims. We can not take this movie at face value. Bill claims that the story of Christ is borrowed from the mythical stories of Egyptian, Greek and Roman Gods like Mithra and Horus. I researched the actual lore of these gods and found Bill's claims to be outright lies. Bill claims that Horus and Mithra were from virgin births. Mithra was born from solid rock, not of a woman. Horus was born from the sorcery of Isis. Virgin birth is quite a stretch. Bill claims Mithra and Horus had 12 disciples. Horus actually had 4 followers and Mithra had only 2, well six if you include 4 animals!! Please folks, know that what Bill is claiming here is that the new testament authors fabricated the Christ stories from other religions. What actually happened is the author of Mithra and Horus lore is Satan himself. Satan knows scripture better than probably you or I. He knows prophecy. It is possible for someone to write these things based on the prophecy of the old testament. Most of Jesus' life is prophesized in the OT. Read Psalm 22. David writes a complete assesment of the Torture and crucifixion of the Christ, hundreds of years before crucifixion is even invented an a means of execution. David is so specific even to start with the actual words that come from Christs mouth on the cross. (My God, My God, why have you forsaken Me?). David goes on to descibe his clothing being cast for lots, his bones being unbroken, (the thiefs on Christs left and right both had their legs broken) water pouring out of Him (when the soldier pierced his side) It is uncanny. I had an atheist freind say that Jesus knew prophecy so he made these things happen. Really, did He make the soldiers gamble for his garments while on the cross? Did He stop them from breaking His legs? Did He make them thrust the spear? Did he orchestrate being born in Bethlehem exactly 28 generations from David in David's bloodline as well? (This is also in prophecy).

I have always likes Bill and will continue to do so. I'd like to have him over for dinner. Although he is confused and hurt by his catholic experience, I bet he is a great guy, eventhough depraved with a deceitful heart like all of the rest of us, including me. The point of Chistianity is to recognize our depravity.

Bill, and all others reading this, embrace the miracle that is your God! Bill's heart will be changed because he has thousands of christians like me praying for it. I'm loving it. Funny how God takes lemons and makes lemonade everytime.

Love to all

I just saw this movie and it was brilliant. I grew up a Baptist and endured countless problems in the church resulting in myself being less than religious. I call myself spiritual and I tell everyone I meet, "God is not religious." I would like to point out there is a big difference between being religious and being spiritual. Being spiritual means I have a one-on-one relationship with God, but denounce organized religion as it is today, being as it is full of corruption, hate, greed, and negativity. I am a Christian. I believe in God very strongly and speak to Him every day. I believe Jesus died for our sins. HOWEVER, the church's use of human nature's fear of the unknown and the constantly rewritten and edited Bible as a business opportunity is blasphemy in itself and, in my opinion, should be stopped. Kudos to Bill Maher for having the cahones to stand up and say, "What if you are wrong? Which, you probably are." The only way the church can save it's image as a credible source of information is to expose the lies made by the early church, make public ALL the scrolls no matter how embarrassing the truth is, denounce the evangelicals who make an absolute mockery of religion, and come out and tell people what they actually DO know, not what is best for business or their own image. Most people know the church has lied, withheld information, and even killed in the name of their secrets. Ironically, by trying to save their own asses from the constant lies and manipulation, they have subjected themselves to a slow and painful economic death as people become smarter and more in touch with the real God, not the hateful, vengeful, jealous God the church preaches about. God is wonderful, I just wish everyone else thought so, too. I, along with many other intelligent people, are awaiting the church's "coming clean" event, which will probably never come, but I have to try in the name of our Lord. It's only right. Meanwhile, I pray in my home privately and leave those who lack the faith to do this on their own to go to church.

prayforbillmaher.com I would like to see a serious effort to pray for Bill Maher's conversion. I think it's the correct response to the movie, and the right thing to do. To that end, my husband and I set up this blog. Please go there, and send people there, and show that you intend to pray by commentary with your opinions. We were poking a little fun at Bill and ourselves when we put a Visa and Mastercard logo on there with two angels holding it up. Go read for yourself.

As a former Christian, I feel this movie highlights some very important aspects that practicing Christians do not take into consideration. For one, it is arrogant to assume that you are right and everybody else is wrong when there is no evidence that Christians are more right than any other religion. Unfortunately, Christianity is spread via ignorance and fear and not sound, reasonable arguments. Do you realize that followers of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam all recognize the Old Testamount as valid, yet these doctrines have different ideas on the path to salvation? These problems need to be addressed.

If Christians want to be taken more seriously, they have to confront the major problems with religion. As we saw in the movie, there are people out there claiming to be Jesus Christ. Not too many people take this seriously, but it highlights the problem of using faith instead of skepticism to elucidate truth. Maher is attacking the argument, not so much the people. So pay attention to the discussion and address the argument with reason and logic or Christianity will continue to lose followers.

"Bill Maher, you wouldn’t do this to the muslim faith would you?"

Actually, the movie addresses Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Scientology, Satanism, and a variety of other fringe religious sects, like Jews for Jesus and polygamists.

So yes, he would, and did.

When I read and see such things as this movie, I have more confidence in my Christian faith, have you seen somebody persecute a lie? Truth is always persecuted, and this is what the Bible foretold about the last days! But be aware: "Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows" (Galatians 6:7)
