My initial reaction is appalled. I really do not like this. With that said I really don't know all the details such as ppl who are already on medicaid and actually do need the help and those on Medicare which I believe is a program that needs to continue.

Sadly, this is so much like what Romney did and it seems like a political move on Obama's part.+

I'm truly surprised Roberts went left and Kennedy went right. I'm not surprised by the outcome. These reforms are quite modest. If you're worried we can't afford it, just think we're already paying for the uninsured every time we use health care. What comes of this is more people will be paying for their own care or be subject to a unenforceable tax that maxes out at 1%, and some other families will get help buying insurance. 10 million or so more people will be eligible for medicaid, a program that is already a joke as a single person can work at McDonalds for half the year and not meet income qualifications, and there are a handful of new regulations on insurance companies that are wildly popular even among Republicans.

I don't like how we were tricked into a play of words with 'taxing' the people. That is more decieving. Forcing/placing a gun to people's heads than letting them decide for themselves in this 'free' country that has a debt it cannot pay in more ways than one. It appears to be all about the election.

I've heard that the primary penalty for opting out of the medicaid expansion was thrown out, but the federal government can still compel states to do so by other means. I have not heard anything about the exchanges being thrown out, which are a lot bigger part of this bill than the medicaid expansion. I don't see what is controversial about that anyways. You can't buy flood insurance in half the states without government subsidies, what's the big deal about health care?

As a disabled person on a fixed income, I can tell you that being forced (as I am) to pay for healthcare is a burden. It costs me $120 a month, and I get no real benefits from it. No prescriptions, no dental, limited hospitalization. Yah, Obama.

For whatever reason you're forced to buy health insurance, it's not because of the ACA. No mandate has taken affect. Typically SSID recipients are put on Medicaid, so assuming your fixed income is coming from a private insurer you can make up to 400% of the poverty threshold and receive help paying for insurance. For a single person the poverty level is about $11,000 so you can make up to $44,000 or so. I'm not sure if the cap is the same for people making that much, but in examples given the cap is put at 2% of income, so you will probably have to pay no more than $75 a month. The ACA also specifies that minimum standards for insurance policies be set. They've already said they would be required to cover preventative care and prescriptions, and I'd put money on hospitalization being included.
