    :shock::shock::shock:

    Was he even conscious when he was admitted? I'm surprised he didn't explode. I'm assuming that he is in ketoacidosis at this point. If that is true, they will need to balance his sugars very slowly. (Hence the 48 hours.) Balancing too quickly can result in brain swelling and subsequent damage.

    Prayers going up for them now, bro.

    My goodness, I don't think I've ever heard of sugar being that high...

    What could possibly cause that?

    Long-term, undiagnosed (and therefore uncontrolled) diabetes is the first thing that comes to mind. When I had to take my niece to the hospital where we first discovered that she was Type 1 diabetic, she was in a state of ketoacidosis and was not entirely coherent. She wasn't in a coma, but her sugars were extremely high (more than 850, 900). Normal blood sugar is supposed to be between 80 and 150. She was hospitalized for 4 days, but they took the first 36 hours to stabilize her sugars. The remaining hospitalization was for monitoring her condition and giving her diabetic training.
