McDonald’s reverses it’s position after the Christian based American Family Association called for a nationwide boycott. Apparently Christians were eating a lot of Big Macs and Happy Meals.

Back in July I made a post about McDonald’s support of gay activists groups, specifically a $20,000 donation to the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) and the Vice President of McDonalds, Richard Ellis, serving on the NGLCC board.

Initially McDonald’s stood by their support of the NGLCC. CEO Jim Skinner said “Being a socially responsible organization is a fundamental part of who we are. We have an obligation to use our size and resources to make a difference in the world … and we do.”

What a difference a three month boycott can make. The American Family Association announced today that McDonald’s has reversed it’s position and agreed to remain neutral on social and political issues. McDonald’s announced that Vice President, Richard Ellis has resigned from the organizations board and that membership in NGLCC will not be renewed once it expires in December.

McDonald’s sent an email to it’s franchise owners saying, “It is our policy to not be involved in political and social issues. McDonald’s remains neutral on same sex marriage or any ‘homosexual agenda’ as defined by the American Family Association.”

You would think a large public company, especially one that markets heavily toward children, would at a minimum remain neutral when it comes to issues like homosexuality. McDonald’s apparently doesn’t agree as they unapologetically endorsed homosexuality by making a $20,000 donation to the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC).

The donation gives McDonald’s membership in the NGLCC as well as a seat on the group’s board of directors. The NGLCC is a homosexual activists group that lobbies elected official to pass pro-homosexual legislation, including laws to legalize homosexual marriage.

The American Family Association (AFA) has requested that McDonald’s simply take a neutral position on homosexual matters. Pat Harris, Global Chief Diversity Officer, Vice President, Inclusion & Diversity for McDonald’s (can you believe McDonald’s even has a position with that title?), responded “I would like to take this opportunity to reaffirm our position on diversity.”

Richard Ellis who filled the seat on the NGLCC board said “I’m thrilled to join the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and ready to go to work. I share the NGLCC’s passion for business growth and development within the LGBT community, and I look forward to playing a role in moving these important initiatives forward.”

Commenting on McDonald’s involvement in social issues, McDonalds CEO Jim Skinner said “Being a socially responsible organization is a fundamental part of who we are. We have an obligation to use our size and resources to make a difference in the world … and we do.”

I thought their obligation was to make a good hamburger.

McDonald’s has every right to give as much money as they want to any organization they choose. How a company spends its money is totally between the board members, the CEO and the shareholders. But it’s also my right to choose where I buy my hamburger, fries (super sized) and coke. McDonald’s has decided to take sides on a issue that the Bible clearly defines as an abomination before God. So what side will you choose? McDonald’s side or God’s side? Think about that next time you get a craving for a Big Mac.
